If you are like me, you were one among the hordes of fanboys who swarmed to movie theaters this past week to let TRANSFORMERSsmash your retinas and kick the everlovin’ crap out of your eardrums. And if you are like me, you did not appreciate the fact that most of the movie was a juvenile, groan-inducing comedy… (I’m not expecting high art or anything, but why does it have to be so f*ckin silly?)
The prospect of a second TRANSFORMERS is not an unappealing one for me, however, since hopefully the franchise would get a chance to forego the shenanigans and focus on the darker implications of the story (c’mon man, it’s war on our planet!). This will not be the case if Michael Bay is at the helm, but it seems like, with the money already pouring in, he’s got a good shot at returning.
He spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the possibility in the last issue:
“Let’s see how this one does. I’ve got a lot of ideas for the next one. There’s a lot of really cool, big robot stuff that I had in my head that we didn’t do. I just want to see how this works. You might not grow as much as a director [to do a sequel]. But it’s kind of like you have your baby and you don’t want someone else to take it.”
ENT. WEEKLY: So, hypothetically, if you were to take on a Transformers sequel, would it be your next film?
“I don’t know if it would be ready. It just takes so long to do a script. A couple things are on the horizon, but [maybe] I’ll do my little movie that I can knock out, because we all think we’re going to have a strike.”
Said “little movie” is about a couple of guys who work in a gym and plot a kidnapping. Apparently, there’s just one car crash in it, which Bay sees as an accomplishment in its own right. If he can manage to limit the jokes that a 12 year old would roll their eyes at, he might just have something…
Whether Bay’s back or not, if Megan Fox returns, I suppose you can count me in. I haven’t fallen so instantly in love since I drank my first beer…
