Though not yet a household name here in the states, British born thespian Alex Pettyfer (right), star of Daniel Barnz’s upcoming BEASTLY, is in discussion to play the lead alien in DreamWork’s film adaptation of I AM NUMBER FOUR. Dig it…

Said to be a science fiction novel for young adults, I AM NUMBER FOUR is a soon to be released book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. It apparently revolves around a group of nine aliens who escaped their home planet just before it was annihilated by a rival species. Hiding out on Earth, the title character (Pettyfer) disguises himself as a human high schooler, only to discover that he is still being hunted by his planet’s enemy.

Alright. Not terrible. Not the most original either, but what is these days?

The novel has been adapted into a screenplay by “Smallville” creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. Word is Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg are in line to produce.

I AM NUMBER FOUR will be the highest profile outing for Pettyfer, who as of this announcement, has four feature films under his belt (as well as one British TV movie).

More as it develops, but until then…what do you make of this project? You dig the basic premise? What about Pettyfer…he the right choice or have you not seen enough of the dude yet to judge that accurately?

Let us know!

Pettyfer’s STORMBREAKER co-star Alicia Silverstone!
