It’s time for a new episode of our video series WTF Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie (formerly known as The Horror Movie That Almost Was), and in this one we’re taking a look at a project I’m really disappointed hasn’t gone into production yet – Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon, director Scott Glosserman‘s follow-up to the really cool 2006 meta slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it HERE). Glosserman’s Behind the Mask co-writer David J. Stieve wrote the script for Before the Mask long ago, but they’ve never been able to get the movie off the ground for one reason or another. Behind the Mask told the story of “the next great psycho horror slasher, who has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo.” Before the Mask would
pick up where Behind the Mask left off, with Vernon disappointed that his fame did not catch on but ready to get back to work. With Before the Mask, Glosserman seeks to create a spreemake, or a mash-up of a sequel, prequel, and remake, that will deconstruct and comment on the archetypes of prequels, sequels, and remakes.
