Curry Barker’s Obsession has become one of the biggest films of the year, earning over $500 million worldwide, receiving rave reviews, and making audiences obsessed (sorry) with Inde Navarette. It’s no surprise that Focus Features would be giving Obsession a big awards push, and THR reports that the film has been submitted for Golden Globes consideration… as a musical or comedy.
Is Obsession a Comedy?
Although Obsession certainly contains darkly comedic elements, I would consider it a horror movie, not a musical or a comedy. However, insiders cite several other genre-bending films as precedents, including Get Out, The Banshees of Inisherin, Triangle of Sadness, Poor Things, The Substance, and Bugonia, all of which were nominated for the Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) Award. Two of them, Banshees and Poor Things, even won it.
Movies in this category have often made people wonder whether they really belong. I’m still scratching my head about The Martian winning in 2015. For some, it’s seen as a way to avoid the bigger competition in the drama category. THR’s report also wonders if this will provide an easier path for Navarrette to snag a Best Actress nomination.
What We Thought of Obsession
Our own Chris Bumbray caught Obsession at SXSW and loved it. “Barker guides the film with a sure hand and doesn’t shy away from hammering home his message about the difference between real love and obsession,” Bumbray wrote. “Many will note the movie’s gallows humor, with gore-heavy moments happening so randomly and brutally that you can’t help but laugh at how demented they are—only to realize moments later that what you’re watching is, in many ways, a classic horror tragedy.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
What’s Next for Curry Barker
Barker already has his next film, Anything But Ghosts, ready to go. The film is written and directed by Barker and co-written by his longtime creative collaborator Cooper Tomlinson. The story also finds the pair starring as “wannabe ‘ghosthunters’ who find themselves in over their heads as things spiral wildly and terrifyingly out of control.” It was recently announced that the film will hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
