“Big Love” scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to pen Carrie remake for Screen Gems?

Deadline is reporting that Sony Screen Gems and MGM are jointly forging ahead with a remake of CARRIE, Brian De Palma’s exemplary 1976 Stephen King adaptation. Not only that, the studio is entrusting the script with a relative unknown…

Word is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who’s only major credentials include writing six episodes of HBO hit series “Big Love,” has been tapped to adapt the new CARRIE screenplay from King’s inaugural novel. Much like the Coen brothers did with TRUE GRIT, Aguirre-Sacasa will focus more on retreading the novel than the movie version, thereby subverting the notion of it being a remake. Apparently the man has a working relationship with King, having adapted THE STAND into a graphic novel not too long ago.

That’s a nice equation and all, but I’m not buying it. First off, the Coens are in a league of their own, and even though John Wayne won an Oscar for TRUE GRIT, it was hardly as quality a film as CARRIE. Remaking mediocre films is okay, especially when the filmmaking acumen of someone like the Coens will inherently elevate the overall product…but remaking a good film? A horror staple? With a relative unknown on the keys? BAH…I’m not feeling it.

What says you? In favor of seeing CARRIE be “remade”? If so, who’s your ideal director to bring this sucker to fruition?
