Bill Murray digs the new Ghostbusters, Sony chairman says haters are great

OK, as much as I'm a proponent of giving the GHOSTBUSTERS remake a break, that new theme is pretty damn bad. We can all agree on that. But the movie itself is still up in the air, as far as I'm concerned.

The newest defense on the GHOSTBUSTERS front comes from Sony chairman Tom Rothman, who told The Hollywood Reporter that "Bill Murray, who had just seen the movie, came out and said how great it was." Dan Aykroyd has also previously expressed his support for the remake, so that's two Ghostbusting alumni on board.

When asked about how he feels about the online bashing of GHOSTBUSTERS, Rothman said:

It’s the greatest thing that ever happened. Are you kidding me? We’re in the national debate, thank you. Can we please get some more haters to say stupid things?

Really, it's true. As much as people hate on remakes, they're spending money on tickets so they can hate them more. And that money brings more remakes. It's a vicious cycle for horror fans, but it's hard to complain about it if you're a Hollywood exec. All news is good news.

I still have a faint, flickering glimmer of hope that this particular remake will be a decent popcorn flick, and Murray's support will hopefully help to assuage at least one or two hears.

The synopsis:

Dead criminals from all eras of New York’s underbelly past have returned to roost among the living in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot. Pilgrims, old-timey sailors, Revolutionary War spirits, and even a couple of zoot-suited gangsters are ready to take on four formidable female busters looking to rid the city of its phantasmic filth.

The GHOSTBUSTERS reboot stars Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Kristen Wiig, along with Chris Hemsworth, Neil Casey, Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams, Matt Walsh, Pat Kiernan, Cecily Strong, and Charles Dance.

It will feature cameos from the original Ghostbusters as well as Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, and Ozzy Osbourne, not to mention Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

The new film will haunt theaters on July 15th.
