Filming has begun on the Shudder original horror film Birth/Rebirth, and Deadline has announced that the cast of the film includes Judy Reyes of Scrubs (who will also be seen in the horror movie Smile when it’s released on September 30th), Marin Ireland of The Umbrella Academy, and AJ Lister of Challengers.

Birth/Rebirth marks the feature debut of director Laura Moss, who also wrote the screenplay with Brendan J. O’Brien. Moss and O’Brien crafted a psychological horror story that is said to be about motherhood and creation, and draws inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The story here centers on

a single mother (Reyes) and a childless morgue technician (Ireland) who are bound together by their relationship to a re-animated little girl (Lister).

Also in the cast are Breeda Wool of Mr. Mercedes and Monique Gabriela Curnen of Power Book II: Ghost.

Shudder’s Craig Engler says “We’re thrilled to be working with Laura and their amazing cast on this unique, wrenching take on a classic tale. Birth/Rebirth is a fantastic blend of psychological and body horror, sure to electrify our members.” Moss said, “I am over the moon to be working with Shudder to finally bring this project to life. It’s been gestating for a long time and I’m so proud of the cast and crew we have assembled to make it happen.”

Birth/Rebirth is being produced by Mali Elfman and David Grove Churchill Viste.

Shudder plans to release Birth/Rebirth in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime in 2023. When a specific release date is announced, we’ll let you know.
