Keira Knightley is back in action as Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Black Doves season 2. The spy thriller series finds Knightley working for a spies-for-hire organization that obtains secrets for the highest bidder. I’ll admit that this one flew under the radar for me the first time around, but I might just have to catch up for the new season.
All About Black Doves Season 2
The logline for the second season reads: “Helen (Knightley) is still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organization she serves: the Black Doves. But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan), preparing to become Prime Minister, she is walking a more treacherous line than ever. As Helen’s enigmatic handler Mrs. Reed (Sarah Lancashire) is ensnared in a ruthless plot to undermine her position in the Black Doves, Helen is reunited with her best friend Sam (Ben Whishaw). The once high-end triggerman is now reduced to lonely drinks in Soho bars and low-rate hits. As they search for answers, loyalties are weaponized, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything. With all the explosive wit of Series 1, Helen and Sam’s mission leads them back to old friends and enemies, through the dark decisions and painful sacrifices of their pasts, and right to the heart of the Black Doves.“
The cast includes Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire, Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Agnes O’Casey, Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley, Neve Campbell, Sylvia Hoeks, Goran Kostic, and Samuel Barnett.
All six episodes will be released on Netflix on November 5.
What We Thought
Although I missed the first season, our own Alex Maidy certainly didn’t. He enjoyed the series, commenting that it was refreshing to see the two leads not as romantic partners, but more as platonic best friends. “Black Doves is a far more interesting character study of Ben Whishaw’s Sam and Keira Knightley’s Helen, both of whom are damaged people who complement each other perfectly,” he wrote. “Usually, spy series turn the leads into romantic partners, but platonic best friends who look out for each other make for entertaining storytelling, and removing any sexual tension between the leads helps make both characters solid individual creations.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
