Black Panther video game reportedly in development at EA

Not long after Marvel Studios debuted a stunning and emotional trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at San Diego Comic-Con, we’re hearing that a Black Panther video game is in the works at EA. The news arrives courtesy of Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who said the game is in its early stages of development on the show Game Mess Mornings.

The title for EA‘s Black Panther video game currently operates under the codename Project Rainer. The Seattle-based development team is comprised of former Monolith Productions members, known for its work on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War. According to Grubb, the Black Panther video game will be a single-player, open-world RPG. Grubb also teased the game will reflect events related to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In short, the original Black Panther will have passed on at the start of the game. From here, players strive to assume the mantle as a new character that steps into the role. It is unclear if T’Challa will be a playable character in the game.

Meanwhile, a jaw-dropping trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. The trailer features Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda and the rest of Wakanda mourning the loss of King T’Challa, aka Black Panther. As the footage continues, we find King Namor (Tenoch Huerta) leading a mission to the surface, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) building her Ironheart suit, and the Dora Milaje prepared to defend Wakanda to the death. The trailer is incredibly emotional while paying tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman but also promises a bold new direction for the franchise. The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer was my favorite thing to come from this year’s Comic-Con, and I can’t wait to see the movie when it comes to theaters on November 11, 2022.
