Black Sails’ Toby Stephens to star in Netflix’s Lost in Space reboot

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

So yesterday Netflix announced the casting of Taylor Russell as teenage daughter Judy Robinson for their potentially ill-adviced LOST IN SPACE reboot. Now comes more casting news, with BLACK SAILS' Toby Stephens (or the Korean bad guy – don't ask – in one of the worst Bond films ever) set to play John Robinson, the scientist patriarch of ill-fated Robinsons as they hurtle into space. Lost, you could say.

The part of John's young son Will Robinson has also been cast (previously played by Bill Mumy of TWILIGHT ZONE and…BABYLON 5 fame). Here he will be played by Maxwell Jenkins (who was cast on another Netflix show that's forever on my queue, the Wachowski's SENSE8).

I don't know how I feel about this cast. I haven't seen Toby Stephens in much (haven't watched BLACK SAILS yet), and what I have seen him in I wasn't a fan (he was pretty awful in DIE ANOTHER DAY and was overdubbed by Clint Eastwood in SPACE COWBOYS). However, I'll wait-and-see. I've heard good things about him on the aforementioned BLACK SAILS. And as for Jenkins, I haven't seen SENSE8 (but it's on my list, I swear!), so I can't comment. But he definitely looks like a moppet who'll get into trouble and scolded by a flailing robot. However, with the casting of Taylor Russells I was hoping for even more diversity, but this seems fine. We still have to see who'll be cast as the mother.

So what do you guys think? Yay, or nay? And you on board the JUPITER-2, or are you hoping it gets lost for good?
