Bohemian Rhapsody 2: Queen guitarist Brian May says they are developing a sequel

This isn’t something I thought would happen but Queen guitarist, Brian May, says he has some ideas for a sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 film that primarily focused on the life and musical career of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury.

May took to Instagram live to reveal that he’s working on putting a sequel to the film into development. While admitting that matching the original film would be a challenge, he says he has been having talks about several potential ideas for the follow-up. May believes that getting a green light for the project will depend upon getting the right script. Here is what he sad to say:

“We are looking at it. Yeah, we have been looking at ideas. It’s going to be hard to follow that one as none of us could have predicted how massive that was going to be. We put a lot of heart and soul into making it and no one could have predicted as it was bigger than Gone With the Wind. But yes, we are thinking maybe it could happen but it would have to be a great script. It’s going to take a while to figure that out.”

I’m guessing a sequel would follow the surviving members of Queen in the years after Mercury’s passing. The prolific singer and musician died in 1991 at the age of 45 due to Aids-related pneumonia, something that is explained at the end of the biopic. Queen continued on without Mercury and, although he couldn’t exactly be replaced, the band continues to tour with drummer Roger Taylor under the name Queen + Adam Lambert with Lambert doing a pretty damn good job of taking on Mercury’s vocals.

Bohemian Rhapsody received mixed reviews from critics but it was a big hit with moviegoers and even scored several Academy Award nominations. Rami Malek, who portrayed Mercury in the film, took home the Oscar for Best Actor while the movie also won for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. The biopic was also nominated for Best Picture, although some believe that due more to it being such a crowdpleaser as it pulled $911.9 million worldwide of a $50 million budget. This makes it the highest-grossing biopic of all time. Director Bryan Singer is credited as the helmer of Bohemian Rhapsody but he was replaced by Dexter Fletcher during production when Singer’s alleged unprofessional behavior was said to be hindering the project. The film also stars Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Allen Leech, and Mike Myers.
