Disney and Marvel are merging what their two brands are best known for with BIG HERO 6, the first comic book adaptation to get the animation treatment from the House of Mouse. Announced a while ago, BIG HERO 6 will be an adaptation of a five issue mini-series from 2008. The comic has a manga-vibe to it and will represent a big departure from the Marvel movies we have seen to date.
Disney director Chris Williams, best known as co-director on BOLT and writer on MULAN, THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE, and BROTHER BEAR, will helm the film alongside Don Hall. The movie is currently slated to be released late in 2014 and is in production with Hall who also wrote the screenplay. Hall is known for the recent WINNIE THE POOH movie and MEET THE ROBINSONS.
BIG HERO 6 features brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city.
BIG HERO 6 is aiming to be a family friendly comic adaptation and will be released in 3D. The comic is obscure enough that the movie can do pretty much anything it wants but will also represent an opportunity to take the kids too young for live action Marvel films and bring them into the fold.
BIG HERO 6 has yet to name any voice talent but is slated to hit theaters on Nov. 7, 2014.
