Booster Gold gets halted by HBO
In a week where two Marvel properties get the boot, with Wonder Man getting canceled and Mahershala Ali stepping away from Blade, DC is suffering a bit of a setback as well. Our Flag Means Death creator, David Jenkins, who was developing a show for DC Comics superhero Booster Gold at HBO, says that Booster Gold is no longer a go. According to Deadline, Jenkins reposted a story on Threads about Mahershala Ali’s statement on the Blade movie not proceeding. Jenkins used his response to announce that his project is also moving on without him.
His post read, “My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward. Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”

Booster Gold in the DCU
The Booster Gold series was on the slate of projects DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran announced as part of Chapter One of the DC Universe, Gods and Monsters, back in January of 2023. Development hasn’t gone as smoothly as expected, as the project lost a previous showrunner. Maybe David Jenkins will be the one who can push it into production. The DC Universe officially got started with season 1 of the animated series Creature Commandos back in December, with Superman being the first film in the universe. Peacemaker season 2 continued the DCU with some extra story on Lex Luthor. Other entries included this year’s Supergirl, which performed below expectations, the film Clayface, which reaches theaters in September of 2026, and the HBO series Lanterns comes later in the summer.
Who or what is Booster Gold?
You might be wondering how the character fits into the DC Universe. Per Deadline, “Created by Dan Jurgens, the protagonist, real name Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, is a member of the Justice League born in Gotham City who attends university on a football scholarship. He is expelled for gambling and becomes a superhero, although he continues to irritate others with his obsession with fame and wealth. His nickname came via Ronald Reagan after he saved the former POTUS.” Gunn and Safran have said that, on the TV show, the character would “use basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in the present day.” There had been rumors that Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) was in the running to play Booster, but the project wasn’t in the casting stage yet.
