I’m going to be honest with you guys – one project I could really care less about is this upcoming AKIRA adaptation. Reason being is because I know absolutely nothing about the source material and truth be told it really doesn’t interest me. But alas it’s my sworn duty as an AITH news editor to bring you all every update our genre has to offer… so here I am!
As if you couldn’t have guessed, I’m here today to tell you all about some potential casting for AKIRA.. and what potential casting it is! Anytime Gary Oldman’s name is mentioned it’s almost like you have to take notice, the man is that good. Add a name like Helena Bonham Carter, and the shot below, and we’ve got ourselves a story!
You see the guys over at Twitch have just learned that both Oldman (above) and Carter have been offered roles in AKIRA. Apparently if everything goes according to plan Oldman would be playing ‘the Colonel’ with Carter tapped as ‘Lady Miyako.’
Neo-Tokyo (now set in New Manhattan) has risen from the ashes of World War III to become a dark and dangerous megalopolis infested with gangs and terrorists. The government seethes with corruption and only maintains a token control over the powerful military that prevents total chaos and hides the secrets of the past. Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda plunge into Neo-Tokyo’s darkest secret when their motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. Tetsuo, captured by the military, is subjected to experiments that make him a powerful psychic, but, unfortunately for Neo-Tokyo, Tetsuo’s powers rage out of control and he lashes out at the world that has oppressed him.
Director Jaume Collet-Sera and Warner Brothers both want Garrett Hedlund for one of the leads of the film, though no offers have been made just yet. That’s about all we’ve got on AKIRA right now but you can bet as soon as more news on this little diddy spills our way we’ll pass that shite right along to all of you.
