The Sandman’s Boyd Holbrook says he’d like to play the Joker at some point in his career

Boyd Holbrook, Joker, The Sandman, Corinthian

Boyd Holbrook became the object of everyone’s nightmares last weekend after making his debut as the Corinthian in Netflix‘s The Sandman. As one of the more disturbed members of the Endless, the Corinthian is a serial killer capable of committing untold horrors. Once he removes his signature glasses, revealing a pair of chattering mouths where his eyeballs should be, one can’t help but think of another iconic character’s toothy grin. I’m talking about the Joker, of course, and as it happens, Holbrook recently told Men’s Health he’d enjoy a turn at playing DC’s Jester of Genocide.

“I just really want to play characters that are foreign to me,” Holbrook said. “Selfishly, because that’s where I get to get my point of view on a different culture, or a different perspective that’s someone else’s, that’s not mine. I feel like The Sandman is pretty high on my bar. I’m never the kind of guy to be closed-minded like I’d never do that, I’d never do that….It really depends. I mean, I think now that we’re talking, The Joker… that character seems to be endlessly reincarnated in an interesting way. Sometimes the anchor is fun, but usually those secondary characters are really great to play. There are just more keys on the keyboard.”

The Joker fits the bill if Holbrook delights in playing unhinged and unpredictable characters. He’s also correct about the Joker changing from one iteration to the next. Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Mark Hamill, and we’ll even throw Joaquin Phoenix in there for good measure. They’ve all uniquely portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime for their respective projects. When I think about the Corinthian’s slithery, sinister nature, I can see why Holbrook would jump at the chance to play Batman’s greatest love and Harley’s worst nightmare. Besides, playing the Joker would add another villain to Holbrook’s bedpost after starring as Donald Pierce in 2017’s Logan. Although Barry Keoghan is poised to be Matt Reeves’ Joker for The Batman franchise, Boyd could get his wish by voicing the character for an animated film. Or, with DC seemingly “reseting,” its universe, there’s a chance for more than one Joker to terrorize Gotham City.

What do you think about Boyd Holbrook wanting to play the Joker? Would he be suitable for the part? Have you watched The Sandman yet? You should. It’s my favorite television series in years, and I’d appreciate it if you would add to the streaming totals. Thanks. Feel free to drop a comment below.
