So far, Brad Pitt and filmmaker Darren Aronofsky haven’t had much luck getting their combined talents on a theater screen.
You may recall that Pitt was the initial star of THE FOUNTAIN (along with Cate Blanchett) before the project crumbled, only to later be rebuilt with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.
Then they were going to hook up for the boxing drama THE FIGHTER, but everyone went their separate ways and left it to Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg and director David O. Russell.
Third time’s the charm? We’ll see. But Pitt and Aronofsky are taking a stab at it with a new project called THE TIGER, based on upcoming nonfiction book by John Vaillant.
The story involves an actual mammal rather than metaphorical, and “takes place on the Siberian plain, where human development is encroaching on the tigers’ habitat — and one tiger turns on the intruders. With townspeople being tracked and hunted with an almost supernatural power, a conservationist game warden must face down the tiger. It is a fight that only one of them can win.”
Screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga (BABEL, 21 GRAMS and the underappreciated THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA) is adapting the book, which sounds like it carries a hint of THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS. Pitt and Aronofsky are producing through their respective Plan B and Protozoa production companies.
