Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Geller, and Josh Gad are the bears who knock in a trailer for the animated comedy Breaking Bear

Considering how monumentally popular Breaking Bad was, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to cook up an animated homage to Vince Gilligan’s award-winning crime drama. Yesterday, Tubi debuted a trailer for its new adult animated comedy, Breaking Bear, starring a surprising amount of A-list talent, with Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Annie Murphy, and Josh Gad leading the charge.

What’s Breaking Bear about?

Breaking Bear is a fur-flying, law-breaking, forest-saving rampage following a dysfunctional family of bears who go full criminal to stop frackers, mobsters, and a psychotic wolf pack from destroying their home. As they spiral deeper into the criminal abyss, they face off against biker gangs, an egomaniacal news anchor, and their own spectacular talent for self-sabotage.

Who are the creative forces behind Breaking Bear?

Created by Julien Nitzberg (The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia) and produced by Evoke Entertainment (Creepshow, Twelve Forever, and Day of the Dead) and Tom DeLonge’s To The Stars Media (Monsters of California, Unidentified), Breaking Bear parodies the tropes of mobster dramas, comically combining elements of characters like Yogi Bear with series like The Sopranos.

Breaking Bear is executive produced by Tom DeLonge (“Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker”), Stan Spry (Creepshow, Day of the Dead), Jeff Holland (Creepshow, Day of the Dead), and Bradford Bricken (Twelve Forever). Brendan Fraser, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Josh Gad are also executive producers, with Julien Nitzberg serving as showrunner.

In addition to Fraser, Gellar, Murphy, and Gad, Breaking Bear also finds Elizabeth Hurley, Chris Parnell, Chris Diamantopoulos, Harland Williams, Jackie Beat, and Tonk Plana leading the cast.

Breaking Bear needs to stand out

The timing of the release of Breaking Bear is curious, given that it’s so soon after Netflix debuted its animal-themed comedy Mating Season. Granted, the two shows have wildly different themes, with Mating Season focusing mostly on looking to get their rocks off, and Breaking Bear being a conservationist drug comedy, but still, the comparisons are there. Thankfully, there’s room for both, though Breaking Bear needs to stand out if it wants to last beyond its initial season. Thankfully, Breaking Bear has major star power behind it, and its ties to Breaking Bad, even if only in spirit, should help it get a boost. I’m going to check it out and see what’s up.

Breaking Bear comes to Tubi on July 24, 2026.
