Just hours after the official news that the outlaw comic flick JONAH HEX had lost its directors, MTV posted an interview with the project’s ostensible star (and sudden A-lister) Josh Brolin.
As to what draw his interest to the tale of a scar-faced bounty hunter, Brolin says: “The absurdity of it. It almost allows you to create a new genre. I love going back into the spaghetti-Western idea and completely turning it around.”
But then again, he makes a comment or two that could provide some insight as to the “creative differences” departure of CRANK directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor: “When I first read it, I thought, “Oh my God, it’s awful!” Brolin says. “It’s so tongue-in-cheek. It’s so ridiculous. But once I started putting people in my mind and saying, “What if I put [John] Malkovich in this role? Then what does this movie become? Now let’s put this producer and director on it and think about how it plays out.” Then it becomes fun. Now I love that movie. If you have a great filmmaker come in, then suddenly, these gags and characters become interesting.”
Curious. If I were the type to speculate based on limited information — and clearly I am — I would infer that not only could Brolin’s involvement have helped vacate the director’s chair(s), but that he (or the studio) may also already have someone else in mind. Either way, Neveldine/Taylor’s “awful” script will probably get some drastic reworking. Should be interesting to see how this one develops. Check out MTV’s entire interview HERE.
