Last I told you about the BURROWERS, director J.T. Petty had just cast Ron Perlman, William Mapother and Doug Hutchison in his horror/western hybrid, as well as released a cool piece of concept art (see above).
In that article I called it a “wild west-set TREMORS,” but Petty is laying the smackdown on anyone who dares mention that goofy comedy-horror flick again.
“Everybody asks about Tremors, why doesn’t anybody ask about Valley of the Gwangi?” Petty asks of Dread Central. “Or The Boogens for god’s sake? I’m a big Kevin Bacon fan. Not to mention Michael Gross. But generally, no, not a big Tremors influence. There’s nothing campy about Burrowers.”
“Burrowers is gonna be a serious movie, I want to make as authentic a portrayal of the Old West as possible (until, of course, the creatures show up,” he continued. “I’m hoping parts of it will be funny, but it’ll be the kind of funny you see in Fargo or Funny Games. No singing cowboys, no beans around the campfire jokes.”
Ah FUNNY GAMES humor – nothing makes me laugh harder (or is that “throw-up in my mouth a little?”). Asked about how the creatures will be realized, Petty talked about Rob Hall’s Almost Human company.
“Rob and his team have been working on the project for more than two years, so we’ve been able to design everything from the bones out. He’s a brilliant guy and his work in Burrowers is really going to f*ck people up.”
Sounds like Petty really wants to mash our brains into irreversible catatonia (what with his FUNNY GAMES-inspired hilarity and his penchant for the works of Michael Gross), which is really what every horror director should do (I think). For the full interview, click it HERE.
