Gerard Butler, the screaming, ass kicking King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s 300, was the choice role for Snake Plissken in the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake. With Len Wiseman leaving the directors chair, only to have Brett Ratner come and go, the film sits in a limbo with no director to put their vision to a John Carpenter classic.

But today, Variety has reported the even Gerard Butler has now escaped from the film.

Before they shot a frame of film, Gerard Butler escaped “Escape From New York,” the remake of the John Carpenter film.

Right after his turn as the Spartan in “300,” Butler made a deal to play Snake Plissken in a film bought at auction by New Line. He left for creative differences. New Line is persevering: studio has brought Jonathan Mostow in to rewrite, with an option to direct.

I was actually looking forward to seeing Butler as Snake. Oh well, now I’m definitely not going to see it, unless it’s like Jason Statham or the Rock or something.
