I don’t really feel bad about not having seen TERMINATOR SALVATION yet, mostly because almost all of the reviews I heard were negative, or worse. (The Arrow is one of the exceptions.) I will see it before this year is through, however, just so I can make a fair top ten list – but up until now, it’s not really been a priority.
That said, it’s still interesting to read James Cameron’s thoughts on the flick; of course he invented the franchise, but he also brought Sam Worthington into the limelight. (Worthington shot his AVATAR footage before making TERMINATOR.) UGO was able to get Cameron to give them a “review” of SALVATION, and the King of the World is rather… polite in talking about it.
“I didn’t think it was bad. I didn’t think it was embarrassing. I don’t think he [McG] let the franchise down in some huge way…”
Cameron’s main complaint seems to be that the flick just wasn’t original enough. “It didn’t feel to me to be enough of a reinvention. I mean the thing we did with the second film is that we reinvented the first film completely; spun it on its ass and made the Terminator the good guy, and came up with a whole new concept for a villain, it felt fresh. I didn’t feel the fourth picture was fresh enough.”
“It also lacked a certain stamp of authenticity because Arnold wasn’t in it. I mean, he was in it briefly, digitally, but that’s not the same thing.”
