Big news for fans of tribal cannibalism (our core audience): Ruggero Deodato is returning to the jungle more than 20 years after he originally freaked people out with his documentary-style nightmare CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, with what is being called a “companion piece” by the folks at Bloody Disgusting. They are careful to point out that it’s NOT a sequel or remake, so what exactly would a companion piece entail? Well, an educated guess would be that it entails innards by the bucketful, maybe a stake through the genitals, perhaps a decapitation or two. What you can be sure of is that it won’t feature any real-life animal killings, as the original (sickeningly) did, but a simulated one wouldn’t be a surprise.
For those unfamiliar with the infamous gorefest, it concerns a professor searching for a lost group of documentarians in the Amazon. When he finds only their footage, it’s revealed that the group was a sadistic bunch who got their jollies pushing around the natives and whacking poor little animals. The consequences of these actions were dire in the extreme, and we get to watch the crew become a veritable all-you-can-eat buffet for the pissed off tribe. This movie was one of the pioneers of the “found footage” genre that THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT made popular many years later, and it was this convincing effect that got CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST a brief reputation as an actual snuff film. Though that was proven untrue, the flick got banned in over 60 (by some accounts) countries, and is still thought of as being one of the most disgusting, disturbing horror flicks ever made. Bring your own barf bag.
