Captain Marvel: Brie Larson defensive when asked how long she’ll play the role

At the D23 Expo over the weekend, Brie Larson was asked how long she’ll play Captain Marvel. One may not expect a specific answer, since Larson isn’t necessarily locked to the part for a certain number of movies. Larson, however, seemed guarded and perhaps a bit defensive in her reply:

As seen in the clip, the softball question seems to have triggered a bit of hostility from Brie Larson. This may be due to how on guard she needs to be against trolls, many of whom quickly took to the forums and social media to blast Brie Larson’s initial casting.

Another comment Brie Larson made at D23 was directed towards Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels’ growing cast. But it also could double as a statement that she needs support now more than ever: “It was really nice to have a team…I had a team!” Considering Brie Larson is a bit of a badass–installing a gym in her home to prep for the sequel–we’re sure she could whoop any troll that comes her way.

Despite the trolls, Captain Marvel fared extremely well at the box office. And that’s not just because it’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having a female-led superhero movie is important not just for pop culture, but young moviegoers everywhere. Through them–and of course, MCU’s target demographic–Captain Marvel grossed $426 million domestically. You don’t push a movie into the top 30 highest-grossing ever because you hate the lead.

Like it or not, Brie Larson will indeed be returning as Captain Marvel. Filming on the immediate sequel, The Marvels, wrapped earlier this year. The set release date for The Marvels is July 28, 2023.
