Cillian Murphy and Stanley Tucci

A couple of quick casting updates for you involving two fantastic actors, an intriguing project and a franchise that many of us are just plain sick of.

Latino-Review has learned that Captain Creepy Eyes himself, Cillian Murphy, has landed one of the lead roles in the film TRANSCENDENCE. He joins Johnny Depp, Kate Mara, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany and Morgan Freeman for Wally Pfister‘s first film as a director. Pfister has a excellent cast lined up for directorial debut and TRANSCENDENCE sounds like it could be a pretty trippy film.

Plot:

Three scientists — Max and the husband and wife team, Will (Depp) and Evelyn — have been developing a programming code for the world’s first fully self-aware computer. A group of anti-technology terrorists assassinate Will, Evelyn uploads his brain into a prototype supercomputer. Although she at first finds the experiment seems to have gone wrong, before too long Evelyn finds Will responding in computer form. She goes on to connect Will to the Internet so he can help make further scientific breakthroughs. Will asks Evelyn to connect a microphone and a camera up to the computer so he can see and speak to her as well. When the anti-technology organization finds out, they try to steal the supercomputer and destroy it, but Will no longer needs the computer to survive.

The other casting news comes from CinemaCon 2013 in Las Vegas where during a presentation for Paramount Pictures, Michael Bay announced that Stanley Tucci has been cast in TRANSFORMERS 4. No word on who Tucci will be playing in the film but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of the businessmen or scientists from the synopsis. I’m not going to waste time crapping on TRANSFORMERS 4 because…well it hasn’t come out yet so that’s not completely fair. Tucci is a great addition to a cast that includes Mark Wahlberg, Jack Reynor and Nicola Peltz but really I have no interest in TRANSFORMERS 4. If the trailer looks decent I’ll still give the film a chance but at this point a new Transformers movie with Michael Bay directing just doesn’t excite me.

Plot:

As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.

You can check out Stanley Tucci next in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE and PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS while Cillian Murphy is currently filming CRY/FLY with Jennifer Connelly.

TRANSCENDENCE is in theaters April 25th, 2014 and TRANSFORMERS 4 is set to be released on June 27th, 2014.
