Another video game adaptation is in the works care of HITMAN producer Adrian Askarieh, Eidos Interactive’s “Just Cause”.
The third person shooter centers on black ops agent Rico Rodriguez with code name The Scorpion, who engages in guerrilla warfare with the dictator of a fictional island called San Esperito, who is said to have weapons of mass destruction. “Just Cause” wasn’t really a huge game when it came out in 2006, but it’s an easy plot to convert to film. The games sequel was one of the most talked about at E3 when they debuted the trailer. Even the trailer sets it up as typical action movie.
Askarieh wants to produce Cause independently with the help of Creative Artists Agency to set it up and make the thing for $30 million. I don’t think it will be too hard of a sell to a studio. With the rise in video game and comic book adaptations, people have been eating it up. In today’s industry, this is definitely the way to go for the moment.
With other producing projects already in-development: Hitman 2, Hack/Slash, Kane & Lynch, Spy Hunter, Lost Squad, and Jonny Quest, Askarieh has his hands full. Let’s hope that the majority of these turn out decent, especially since developers describe Cause’s Rico as, “the child of one thousand comic books and action movies peoples. He is James Bond, Mad Max, Jason Bourne, El Mariachi, Wolverine, Punisher, Rambo, Tony Montana and Han Solo, Che Guevara all rolled into one. With a touch of Enrique Iglesias.” Enrique Iglesias?! Okay, we can all start to worry now.
