Child’s Play remake planned

I’m a lucky boy today! Just finished an article about a potential EXORCIST remake (good luck getting horror fans excited about that one, WB), now I’m writing one about a CHILD’S PLAY redux!

Shock Till you Drop caught up with producer David Kirschner at aome function where, surprise freakin’ surprise, he told them that he was prepping a remake of the Tom Holland film he cut his teeth on almost 20 yeas ago.

“We’re discussing it with Don Mancini, who has written all of them with us from the beginning. The next one we’re going to do is we’re going back and remaking the first one and even pushing it further and making a very terrifying version of the first one, which is pretty scary as it is.”

So they’re trying to get the guy who has controlled the series thus far to remake it. So, gee um, WHAT’S the point?! Why not just make some other killer doll movie?!

I’m not naive, the reason is obvious: “Look at ‘Halloween’,” Kirschner said. “It’s kind of commerce to keep the franchise going, and another reason to go see it. For me, it’s exciting, because the first one was really scary and then from there, we kind of… my favorites are 1 and 4. I love 4, it really makes me laugh and I think Jennifer Tilly is so great, but just the idea of going back to where we were the first time around and I think for me, it’s almost 30 years later for me as a filmmaker from where I started to now, and the idea of taking some skill that maybe I didn’t possess then and putting it towards the next film, I think could be exciting.”

While doubtful to cause the kind of furious uproar a confirmed EXORCIST remake would (I’m always surprised to find how many people DON’T dig on CHILD’S PLAY, even though I still think it’s a good little flick) there’s no getting around the likely ridicule-mixed-with-disinterest this news will provoke from genre-fans.

Finally, Kirschner says the script will be “pretty close” to the original one – further negating this movie’s necessity – and that the doll will be animatronic. Whew, we can all rest easy now…

Jennifer Tilly IS great, you’re right Mr. Kirschner…
