You gotta love the logic behind remaking a film from the 70s that was remade in the 90s. Maybe there’s another spin that could be pulled that the previous 2 films didn’t quite get.
But it gets better: the film in question is PIRANHA! Yes, the parody of JAWS, about man-eating fish terrorizing college crowds who just want to swim and get their pound on is going to be remade. Again.
Roger Corman produced a made-for-cable remake of his classic back in ’95, and now Chiller Films is out to tackle the project. If you’ve never heard of them, it’s because this will be their first feature.
The new remake will be written by Chuck Russell, the same dude who wrote (and directed) THE BLOB remake back in ’86, and who directed NOES 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS (not to mention ERASER). He’s not read to committ to directing PIRANHA until he has the finished script, and then he’ll decide.
I say he should do it! THE BLOB was cool, and his other films are certainly entertaining. Why not direct it is the question.
With that said, why the hell are they remaking PIRANHA in the first place? I mean, sheesh, if you’re going to remake a classic, remake PIRANHA 2: THE SPAWNING! At least then you’ll be able to one-up James Cameron and do a better job than he ever could (although, for a first feature, it’s pretty good). Ah well…
More news on PIRANHA as it comes out!
