I was living in LA in ‘99 and had a chance to meet my icon. None other than Clive Barker (NIGHTBREED, HELLRAISER) himself. I’ve been a huge fan ever since I first picked up the BOOKS OF BLOOD, and my enthusiasm for his work has never flagged. Unfortunately my fanboy-ness led to the embarassing, “Man you’re my favorite author!” assertion when I met him at a book signing, but he was gracious and very cool.
The tough part for fans, though, is that he kinda fell of the genre radar. Well good news! He’s coming back full force, with a genre film company dedicated to hardcore horror. Even better, the fantastic folks over at SuicideGirls got permission from Rue Morgue to reprint the exclusive, extensive interview with him from the current dual-cover issue.
Here’s a taste of Clive chatting about upcoming film plans for the aforementioned BOOKS OF BLOOD stories:
I’ve always dreamed that at some point I would have a chance to make a library of movies based upon this material so that I would have the cinematic equivalent of the Books of Blood called the Films of Blood and that’s what I think we have here. We have investors who are excited by the prospect of letting us make two movies a year, which we will have creative control over, which will be very strong, hardcore horror movies, and even stronger and more hardcore when we get to the DVD versions which I want to make as complete an experience as possible so that in a few years time we’ll be able to go to our DVD locker and take out fifteen Films of Blood.
Sweet! He also talks about what he’s been up to, his feeling about genre work in general, and the responsibility he feels to horror. It’s not a shine job. This is an insightful, honest and intriguing interview. Gotta say that reading it made me about as happy on the horror front as I’ve been in quite some time.
