Nothing’s etched in stone at this point, but a source out of Deadline Hollywood has it that Steven Spielberg may return to the world of artificial intelligence by directing ROBOPOCALYPSE as his next film. Not only that, CLOVERFIELD writer Drew Goddard has been tapped to adapt Daniel H. Wilson’s unfinished tome to the silver screen. Hot damn…this shite’s starting to cook up nicely, ay?!?
The property was acquired by DreamWorks and Doubleday back in November, so it makes sense that Spielberg is at least entertaining the notion of coming on board. Hopefully he won’t back out last minute and merely wave an E.P. credit at the film.
For those who’ve forgotten or haven’t heard of ROBOPOCALYPSE, the story centers on a realistic look at “the fate of the human race following a robot uprising.” Not much else in needed, is there? Spielberg and Goddard teaming up for this kinda material is what geek-boy wet dreams are made of. If this story holds, y’all mofos might wanna lock some diapers up pronto.
We all know Spielberg is currently in post on his film adaptation of THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN. He also has a project called INTERSTELLAR attached to his name (with a 2013 release year), and his long gestating Lincoln biopic should not be slept on. Others in the Spielberg camp contend projects like WAR HORSE, GERSHWIN, and THE 39 CLUES could also emerge as the front-running next film for arguably the most successful filmmaker of all time to spearhead.
