cobra kai, season 4, filming

Cobra Kai kicked off its third season at the top of the new year on Netflix and it has already received raves from fans and critics alike. If you have already binged the entire third season you're probably already eagerly anticipating the fourth season and while there is no release date set just yet, it has been revealed when filming will begin on season 4.

Series co-creator Josh Heald revealed to "Popculture.com" that season 4 is tentatively set to begin filming early this year. A lot of the start date has a lot to do with the state of Hollywood right now due to the pandemic. Southern California has gone on pause in terms of shooting projects until at least mid-January due to the recent COVID-19 surge and it's just a matter of making sure it's safe for cast and crew to go back to work. Even though we might experience a slight right until the start of production, Heald revealed that they're all ready to go with the fourth season at a moment's notice:

"We are looking to make Season 4 in 2021. COVID has thrown a wrench into everyone's plans for exactly when production begins. But our expectation is in early 2021, we will be in production. We are just keeping our heads down and making sure that the story makes sense and the scripts are solid and getting our ducks in a row so the moment that everything looks good, we can begin. The beauty is our stages have so many sets at this point. Things that used to be locations, we've built onstage…The moment that it's a go, we will be ready to jump with very little prep."

Cobra Kai is one of the true success stories of television. The Karate Kid sequel series began its run on YouTube and its two seasons proved to be quite successful on the platform. When YouTube decided to step away from scripted programming. Netflix stepped in and acquired the show and they released the first two seasons on the streamer back in August. While Cobra Kai's run on YouTube was indeed a hit, the move Netflix opened the show up to many more eyes and it soon became one of the most popular shows on their platform. The show consistently trended as their top show and this momentum only continued to build as its third season launched last week. I can't wait to see the numbers from the season three debut because I'm sure Netflix is seeing a lot of traffic from the latest installment.

The show currently holds a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it seems to be a series that has a definite plan. Ralph Macchio, who plays Daniel LaRusso, recently said that the writers have the show planned out through season six and this is most likely why the show has maintained a solid quality thus far. Executive producer Jon Hurwitz had this to say about the future of the series"

"We have plans for several more seasons of the show. When we started writing Season 1, we had a clear sense where we wanted things to end, but we never knew exactly how long it would take to get there. … We've written Season 4, or most of it. We have thoughts beyond that, and it's going to be an ongoing dialogue with Netflix."

Cobra Kai takes place over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament with the continuation of the inescapable conflict between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). The third season finds everyone reeling in the aftermath of the violent high school brawl between their dojos, which has left Miguel in a precarious condition. While Daniel searches for answers in his past and Johnny seeks redemption, Kreese further manipulates his vulnerable students with his own vision of dominance. The soul of the Valley is at stake, and the fate of every student and sensei hangs in the balance. The series also stars Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni Decenzo, Vanessa Rubio, Peyton List, and Martin Kove.
