Director Michael Chaves's "it's not part of the Conjuring Universe… oh, but it is!" supernatural horror film THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA made substantially less at the global box office than the other films in that franchise, but still did quite well for itself. The movie ended up pulling in over $121 million on a budget of $9 million.

This was the first Conjuring Universe movie I didn't see in the theatre, but I'll catch up on it when it hits home video, and that will be happening very soon.

THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA is getting a digital release on July 16th, and that will be followed by a DVD and Blu-ray release on August 6th. If you'd like to pick up a copy, they're available for pre-order on Amazon.

Written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA tells the following story:

La Llorona.  The Weeping Woman.  A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand.  The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations.  In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain.  Now her tears are eternal.  They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed.  La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own.  As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious… and her methods more terrifying.

In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.  Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide.

Beware of her chilling wail…she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom. Because there is no peace for her anguish. There is no mercy for her soul. And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.

Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, Patricia Velasquez, Marisol Ramirez, Sean Patrick Thomas, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, and newcomer Roman Christou star, and ANNABELLE's Tony Amendola makes a special guest appearance to tie the movies together.

Special features on the Blu-ray and DVD will include:

– The Myth of La Llorona

– Behind the Curse

– The Making of a Movie Monster

– Deleted Scenes

– Storyboards

It doesn't exactly sound like an exciting release, but I suppose it will get the job done.

THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA was produced by James Wan, Gary Dauberman, and Emile Gladstone, with Judson Scott and Victoria Palmeri co-producing and Richard Brener, Michael Clear, Walter Hamada, Michelle Morrissey, and Dave Neustadter serving as executive producers.
