Sure enough, it’s time for another edition of AITH’S KILLER GUIDE TO HORROR! In this installment, our man Nick tackles one of the most memorable boogeymen from my childhood (and I’m sure I’m not alone). I’m talking about POLTERGEIST villain Kane!
While he was simply known as the Beast in the original POLTERGEIST, the film’s sequel gave a face and persona to the evil presence who tormented the helpless Freeling family. Before he passed on, Kane was a reverend who offed himself and his congregation in anticipation of the end of the world. (What better place to put a housing development than on their mass grave?!) Zeroing in on young Carol Anne, Kane made it his mission to abduct the girl and bring her into his dimension by any means necessary.
Julian Beck portrayed the character in POLTERGEIST II: THE OTHER SIDE and oh how he scared the bejesus out of me when I was a wee lad. Actually, he’s still scary to this day! Sadly, Beck died soon after shooting POLTERGEIST II and another actor portrayed the villain in POLTERGEIST III, not quite as effectively I might add. Still, there’s no doubt the character made a vivid impression on a generation of moviegoers, the youngins especially.
