Craven on new Screams

We all scream for more SCREAM! At least, that appears to be what the consensus is. Just last week, Jared P. happily informed us that we haven’t seen the last of Ghostface and all his horror-movie-inspired anecdotes. Yes, Kevin Williamson is apparently hard at work writing out the fourth, fifth, and sixth installments. But what about the psycho behind the camera that guided Sydney Prescott, Gail Weathers, and Dewey Riley into pop culture history? What does Wes Craven have to say on all this fresh buzz? Well, now we can find out thanks to an interview conducted by Digital Spy. Here is what Freddy’s main man had to say:

“Bob Weinstein (The Weinstein Company co-chairman) has talked to me, he’s interested in me directing it. I had a brief conversation with Kevin [Williamson]. I know that Kevin is writing. What I’ve said to Bob is I’m not closed to it, I’m not open to it, I’ll be perfectly happy to read a script and tell him what I think. That’s where it’s at and I’m not expecting a script until August. I don’t know what the premise is or anything.”

Okay, so he does want to do it and doesn’t want to do it? Talk about dancing around the issue. I’d be willing to wager a stack of outdated horror VHS tapes that Craven talking about the sequels is a pretty clear indication that he ain’t ruling ’em out. I mean, come on, if they got him back for 2 and then 3, how hard could it be to wrangle him back for a few more. And although Wes claims to not know the premise, he does seem to know this:

“I don’t think it’s a reboot and Kevin, when he talked to me, said, ‘Remember, it’s not just Scream 4, it’s Scream 5 and 6.’ So I guess he has a trilogy in mind. I’ve been told, and I don’t think they’ll mind if I say this, the deals on David Arquette and Courtney are virtually set. I believe everybody else will be new.”

So, wait, no Neve Campbell? Not even a notion of Neve? I find that hard to believe. Besides, has Neve gone on to any bigger and better things since her SCREAM days? Not counting her new embracement of nudity, she really hasn’t been in any ground-breaking films. I’m fairly certain that the fans would want her back. A Dewey/Gail-only SCREAM just wouldn’t feel right. Regardless, I’m sure we’ll be getting some more updates on this project as the summer progresses.

Two SCREAM hotties are better than one.
