Writer/director Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD might be a contender for Best Picture at the next Oscars ceremony, but while we wait to find out if his film is one of the Academy's favorite movies of the year, Tarantino has made an unexpected pick for his favorite film of 2019.

Speaking with Pete Hammond of Deadline, Tarantino said his favorite film of the year so far (we'll see if anything can unseat it in November or Decemeber) is the alligator thriller CRAWL. That film "impressed him in every way, in terms of pure filmmaking."

Produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Alexandre Aja from a screenplay by Shawn and Michael Rasmussen, CRAWL tells the following story:

When a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father. Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears.

The film stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper.

Hammond agreed with Tarantino that CRAWL is a good one, as it put him on the edge of his seat and "is full of exceptional craft for the horror genre."

I wouldn't pick CRAWL as my top favorite of the year, but I did have fun watching it. The film is now on Blu-ray and DVD, and copies can be purchased HERE.
