While not necessarily falling into the “horror” genre coveted most by folks ‘round these parts, the new film EASTERN PROMISES has one thing going for it that we all can agree makes it a certifiable must-see: David Cronenberg. Okay two things: Cronenberg and Naomi Watts.
Cronenberg of course has newfound respect amongst the general movie-going public for his mainstream (more of less) thriller A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, but there’s no doubt that he’ll always be the director of THE FLY, VIDEODROME, and SCANNERS to us horror hounds.
EASTERN PROMISES looks promising (see what I did there?) however: A young midwife (Watts) finds a mysterious diary on a dead girl – which is devastating news to the Russian Mafia, who dispatch an ominous killer (Viggo Mortenson) to retrieve it.
Definitely worth a look kids. After this, Cronenberg has MAP TO THE STARS on his plate, and then hopefully after that he’ll get back into some of that body-transforming, goo-spewing action he’s so beloved for.
