Sometimes you hear movie news that just sounds weird because of an odd pairing, and sometimes you hear movie news that sounds weird because of a certain seemingly crazy actor involved. For this news item, we get both. It appears that Tom Cruise will serve as executive producer for the film DEATH RACE 3000, the remake of the Sylvester Stallone film, DEATH RACE 2000. The film, which will star Jason Statham, will begin shooting this summer in Montreal.
For as weird as it is to hear that Tom Cruise is going to produce a film called DEATH RACE 3000, it gets even weirder after you hear what DEATH RACE 3000 is about: In the future (2020), the Death Race is a globally popular sporting event, and there isn’t a bigger badass in the sport other than Frankenstein, the masked fan favorite racer who during the race will kill people by using his crazy driving tactics and heavily armed car…because it’s called a Death Race. Anyways, the other participants in these races are prisoners and the racetrack is part of a complex prison facility called Terminal Island.
So it turns out that the fan favorite, Frankenstein, has died a bunch of times in these Death Races, but because he is an advertising and merchandise commodity, the fans are tricked that he just gets hurt in the crashes, while the people running the race just put another lowly prisoner behind the mask and plop them in the car and bingo, new Frankenstein.
Sounds like an odd pairing, doesn’t it?
