The momentum continues to build for Crystal Lake. Just weeks after Peacock released the first teaser trailer for the long-awaited Friday the 13th prequel series (you can watch it in the embed above), Warner Bros. Discovery has acquired the A24 production for HBO Max across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series will premiere on HBO Max across those territories later this year, while U.S. audiences will be able to watch all eight episodes when they debut on Peacock on October 15.
The international pickup is another vote of confidence in what has become one of the year’s most anticipated horror television events.
Adding to the excitement, Crystal Lake has also been selected for the Primetime lineup at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The festival, which runs from September 10 through September 20, will showcase episodes from the series ahead of its streaming debut alongside other high-profile television projects including Mike Flanagan’s Carrie adaptation.
Linda Cardellini leads the Friday the 13th prequel
Produced by A24, Crystal Lake stars Emmy nominee Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, the grieving mother whose actions set the original Friday the 13th in motion. Rather than revisiting the events of the 1980 film, the series explores Pamela’s life after the drowning of her young son Jason.
A prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise, the series follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?
Although the series is inspired by the original film’s backstory, showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has previously described it as a psychological character study that is also “100 percent” a slasher series at heart.
The cast also includes William Catlett as Police Chief Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, and Callum Vinson as young Jason Voorhees.
A long road to the screen
Crystal Lake has been a long time coming. Peacock originally ordered the series in 2022 with Bryan Fuller attached as writer and showrunner, but Fuller exited the project in 2024 due to creative differences. Brad Caleb Kane eventually took over creative duties, steering the series in a new direction while remaining focused on Pamela Voorhees as the central character.
Horror fans won’t have to wait much longer
Between its TIFF selection, Warner Bros. Discovery’s international HBO Max acquisition, and Peacock’s October premiere date, Crystal Lake is being positioned as one of horror’s biggest television events of the fall. After years of legal complications kept the Friday the 13th franchise largely dormant, the series represents the property’s biggest expansion in decades.
