Obsession writer/director Curry Barker has his sights set on a very different kind of movie. The filmmaker recently revealed that he and producing partner Cooper Tomlinson have talked about making an R-rated take on the Indiana Jones concept, one that would push the boundaries of the action adventure genre.

In an interview with Gold Derby, Barker said he would love to make what he described as “a crazy adventure movie.”

“I would want to do a really f–ked up, rated-R version of Indiana Jones. I want to do a crazy adventure movie. That’s something that Cooper and I have talked about, because we feel like we’ve never seen something like that; we’ve only ever seen the family friendly version. But what happens if two regular guys, or one regular guy, goes on a journey that turns crazy? Literally pushing the boundaries of that genre would be fun for me.”

The Indiana Jones movies occasionally pushed boundaries themselves, featuring melting faces and heart-ripping. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom went so far, the ratings board had to create the PG-13 in response to it. But Barker wants to make an adventure movie that goes even further.

What’s Next for Curry Barker?

Barker has become one of horror’s most talked-about rising filmmakers following the success of Obsession. His next feature, Anything But Ghosts, is scheduled to reach theatres on May 7, 2027, through Focus Features, with Blumhouse Atomic producing. Barker wrote and directed the horror comedy with longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson, and the two also star as wannabe ghost hunters. The cast includes Violet McGraw, Chris Reinacher, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul.

Barker is also set to write and direct a new reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24. He has additionally secured an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse Atomic to write, produce, and direct another original film.

An R-rated Indiana Jones-style adventure would certainly be a different direction for the filmmaker, but Barker’s comments make it clear that he and Tomlinson have been thinking beyond horror. Whether that particular idea ever becomes a movie remains to be seen.
