Dante talks Gremlins

Latino Reviews had a chance to talk with legendary genre director Joe Dante (the man behind THE HOWLING) on the set of his latest dip into horror, THE SCREWFLY SOLUTION, which is apart of MASTERS OF HORROR Season Two. In it, he had lots of interesting things to say, including his thoughts of studio movies and yes… even a line about a second sequel to GREMLINS!


I know we’d all give our right nut or our first born to see a GREMILINS 3, but after hearing Dante’s take on the matter, I can see why he’s not really down with the whole thing. Check it:

I think what’s holding it up is that they can’t conceive of what to do because the first movies were defined by the technology, it was what the puppets could do and do well and not do and that’s what the movies became. Now you could do anything with CGI so the field is so open that nobody could focus on what exactly it should be. I can’t say I’m looking forward to seeing it.


The man has a point- the puppets made that movie work (well, the script and story helped), and these days… well, puppets don’t mean shite. They’d animate it, and it’d look lame and we’d all slump out the theater pissed off and ready to fight. The bastards.


Anyway, Dante also shares his thoughts on the state of studio movies these days (Movies in general? Pitiful.), as well as why he loves the freedom of directing in the MASTERS series. It’s quite the good read, and if you have the time, I suggest you CHECK IT OUT. Sure, he might have blown our hope that he’d be involved with GREMLINS 3, but at least he justified his actions and damnit- the guy has a point!
