Dante’s Inferno re-imagining coming to Freeform? Sure, why not

A drama series inspired by Dante Alighieri’s narrative poem Dante’s Inferno is now in development from Sleeper Cell creators/executive producers Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris over at Freeform. Yeah, you read that right. Described as a contemporary reimagining of the 14th-century epic poem set against the demonic underworld of present-day Los Angeles, Dante’s Inferno follows 

Grace Dante, who thought her life sucked. Between parenting her drug addict mother and her troubled brother, our 20-something hero has had to give up all her dreams. Then one day everything changes and her dreams start magically coming true, school, career, love… but the godfather of all this good fortune is the Devil himself. And to outwit him, she’ll have to journey through Dante’s Inferno.

Reiff & Voris will write the script alongside writer-producers Nina Fiore & John Herrera (THE HANDMAIDEN'S TALE). The four will executive produce alongside Danielle Claman Gelber (ONE CHICAGO) and Studio 71’s Michael Schreiber and Dave Devries.

No word on whether the other two parts (Purgatorio, and Paradiso) of Alighieri’s Divine Comedy will be adapted too. This is not the first time someone has tried to adapt the poem to the screen. Back in August of 2015, we passed along word Warner Bros. purchased a pitch from screenwriter Dwain Worrell which would see the tale turned into a major motion picture of epic "scale and franchise potential." But that never happened.
