Screenwriter-turned director David Ayer is feeling a bit nostalgic as the 20th anniversary of his second produced screenplay approaches. Training Day was released on October 5, 2001, and Ayer took to Twitter to reflect on his iconic screenplay.
Ayer uploaded three photos to his Twitter page of the screenplay alongside a caption that read, “The things you find when you’re not looking…” In addition to the title page for the screenplay, Ayer included shots of what are arguably two of the film’s most memorable scenes. The first features the two main characters played by Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke bantering in a coffee shop and the other photo depicts a clip of the tense scene in which Alonzo (Washington) forces his trainee Hoyt (Hawke) to smoke marijuana at gunpoint which is soon revealed to actually be PCP. Training Day was David Ayer’s second produced screenplay after 2000’s U-571, and while that film was moderately successful, Training Day achieved a level of mainstream success that has made it a pop-culture staple even today. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film follows a day in the life of rookie LAPD narcotics officer Jake Hoyt (Hawke), as Alonzo Harris (Washington) takes him through gang-ridden neighborhoods and dangerous situations during a harrowing one-day evaluation. Training Day was a commercial success, grossing $104 million globally on a $45 million budget, and the two leads were also praised for their performances. Denzel Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor as he played brilliantly against type as the film’s villain while Ethan Hawke was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
