Look, I don’t know if this project is going to be horror-related in the long run, but when I hear David Lynch is working on a movie starring a monkey, I jump on it.

Lynch, the visionary oddball best known for ERASERHEAD, BLUE VELVET and WILD AT HEART, is (as you probably know) currently scripting the resurrection of “Twin Peaks” with the original series’ co-creator Mark Frost. (It will arrive on Showtime in 2016.) In the meantime, he’s got an unusual-sounding project in the works; one that is pure Lynch.

In an interview with The Guardian (h/t to fansite Welcome to Twin Peaks), Lynch breaks the head-spinning news that he’s currently making what he describes as “a monkey film.”

Right now I’m mostly writing, I’ve got a painting going and I’m building a chair. I love to build things and this is for a monkey film. I’m working with a monkey named Jack and that’ll come out sometime. It is not a chimpanzee, the monkey came up from South America.”

I like every one of those sentences.

As noted in the opening paragraph, it remains to be seen if Jack the monkey’s antics will put him in horror/thriller territory, but as I also noted, this is David Lynch we’re talking about here. A “David Lynch monkey film” is a thoroughly chilling proposition. Is Lynch craftin his very own MONKEY SHINES?!
