Dexter: New Blood will give the series a proper finale

I think most people who stuck with Dexter throughout the entirety of its original run can agree that the series finale didn’t give the character the send-off he deserved. As we know, the serial killer with a heart of gold will be returning for Dexter: New Blood, a limited series that picks up Dexter’s story ten years after the events of the previous finale.

While speaking during Showtime’s TCA executive panel, Showtime’s President of Entertainment Gary Levine admitted that the original ending didn’t hit the mark.

Dexter is a jewel in the crown of Showtime and we didn’t do it justice in the end. That has always been a burr under my saddle. We’ve always wanted to see if there was a way to do it right and it took a long time to figure out what that was. It took a long time for Michael [C. Hall] to be willing to revisit the role. We’re thrilled to get [Clive] Phillips back. We finally got to a place that I just can’t wait to show the world.

Levine continued: “We call it a limited series but the rules say it can’t be a limited series if it’s coming from something that was on the air for a long time. So we call it a special event here. For me, it’s a revisiting of Dexter and a proper finale for a brilliant season.” Although Levine said that Dexter: New Blood is being envisioned as an end for Dexter, they’re not ruling out a possible spin-off down the road if everything works out. Speaking of the future, Showtime also released a new behind-the-scenes image from Dexter: New Blood which shows Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott).

Set 10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, Dexter: New Blood finds him “living under an assumed name in the small town of Iron Lake, New York. Dexter may be embracing his new life, but in the wake of unexpected events in this close-knit community, his Dark Passenger beckons.” In addition to Michael C. Hall, Dexter: New Blood also stars Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Jack Alcott, Johnny Sequoyuah, Jamie Chung, Jennifer Carpenter, and John Lithgow making a cameo as the Trinity Killer. Dexter: New Blood will debut on Showtime on November 7, 2021.
