Director Chad Stahelski gives release date update on John Wick 4

Director Chad Stahelski and his writing team are in the early stages of writing JOHN WICK 4 and they are also working around the industry-wide shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This has put many films in pre-production in question because there has been no set date for Hollywood to get up and running again. During a talk with "Collider", Stahelski gave an update on JOHN WICK 4 and it does appear that its planned release date could be in question. 

JOHN WICK 4 has been dated for May 21, 2021, and its star, Keanu Reeves, planned on competing with himself at the box office because Warner Bros. set the same release date for THE MATRIX 4, also featuring Reeves. When asked if the May 2021 release date still stands, Stahelski gave some clarification on the matter:

"Between how much we want to expand the John Wick — let’s just call it a ‘franchise’, I guess — and the pandemic, I couldn’t tell you a release date for the next one. I mean, Matrix was only four weeks in when this all happened. So, Keanu’s gotta go finish his commitment up on The Matrix, which is a big deal and which I think will probably take him until the end of the year. Then we have to go into our prep mode and the we’ll start. So release dates, I’m sure with every production from Dave’s stuff to our stuff, who knows right now."

THE MATRIX 4 did suspend production about four weeks in and it has been hinted that its release date could be delayed due to the stall caused by the pandemic. Warner Bros. already shifted the release date for THE BATMAN due to this so it would not surprise me if THE MATRIX 4 saw a similar release date change. Since Reeves has to complete MATRIX 4 before jumping into the next JOHN WICK film, it's likely that the fourth installment of that franchise will be pushed back as well.

I was actually looking forward to Keanu vs. Keanu on May 21, 2021, although I figured those dates would be changed regardless of the pandemic because that audience and fanbase would definitely cut into each other.
