Matt Reeves’ The Batman will don the cowl in October 2021

Matt Reeves, The Batman, COVID-19

While villains like Penguin, Scarecrow, Talia al Ghul, and the Joker might not always be a match for Batman, it would seem as if COVID-19 is an enemy that even the Dark Knight can't vanquish.

It's been reported that Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN, which is currently on a production pause in London, will no longer fly in theaters on June 25, 2021. As of Monday, the film has been delayed by four months for an October 1, 2021 release. If that date sounds familiar, it's because the early October date is synonymous with the theatrical debut of DC's R-rated JOKER.

For the moment, Reeves plans to resume production in London as soon as it's safe for cast and crew members to make their return to the set. Before the COVID-19 pandemic really kicked into high gear, and lockdown regulations were enforced, Reeves had already shot a quarter of the film. This being the case, Reeves has reportedly spent a portion of his COVID quarantine sifting through the project's existing footage.

Directed by Matt Reeves (CLOVERFIELD, WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES), THE BATMAN stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman; Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman; Collin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin; Paul Dano as Edward Nashton / The Riddler; Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth; Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson; John Turturro as Carmine Falcone; and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, among others.

Plot details are still being kept under the cloak of night for the time being, though I suspect that we'll be learning much more about the film sooner rather than later. Oh what I wouldn't give to get an early look at the script penned by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin.

In other DC superhero film news, THE FLASH is set to run at top speed and into theaters on June 3, 2022, while the studio's sequel to SHAZAM! is now expected for a November 4, 2022 theatrical premiere.

Are you bummed to hear that THE BATMAN is being delayed, or have you simply accepted that everything you're looking forward to has been pushed to a later date on account of COVID-19? Feel free to let loose in the comments section below.
