Director Colin Trevorrow reveals that Jurassic World will shoot on film

Director Colin Trevorrow is gearing up to take us all back to a very familiar park in 2015 and has just revealed that he’ll be doing so with a now “classic” format: film. Trevorrow, via Twitter, announced that JURASSIC WORLD will shoot in both 35 mm and 65 mm film with veteran cinematographer John Schwartzman handling the director of photography duties. He also revealed that they would start shooting in April.

With the majority of the industry shifting over to digital this is a surprising move, but a welcome one. Although Trevorrow didn’t list any specific reasons for shooting on film instead of digital, my guess would be that he’s attempting to capture the look and feel of Spielberg’s 1993 JURASSIC PARK, which was also shot on film. I’m curious how they’ll handle the 3D and IMAX stuff, which I’m guessing can only be post-converted from a film format. Either way, I’m excited about this news and I think it’s another nod to the fact that Trevorrow has the pulse of this franchise and is dedicated to delivering something outstanding.

JURASSIC WORLD is set to trample into theaters on June 12, 2015.
