A few days ago Jake D. told you all how DUNE director Pierre Morel was scrapping the previous script by Peter Berg and Josh Zetumer and that the film will probably be going the way of 3-D. Well damn that was a lot to take in one shot, no? I hope you’re recovered though because I’ve got some more DUNE talk for you all today!
You see Pierre Morel has got a pretty impressive slate of action flicks to his name, most offering very different, dare I say stylized action compared to generic action flicks. So how is the man going to tackle DUNE in that department? Tribeca Film caught up with the director recently and asked him just that:
“I don’t know. It’s all about—I’m a huge Dune fan, a reader, like for 30 years; I read it when I was a teenager. I’ve read it 10 times maybe, so I want to stay true to the book. Saying that, I also think that there’s a lot of scenes that are not described in the books—it’s just mentioned, like the bad guys attacking something—and it might make sense to include those in the movie, not just by mentioning it but showing them, and that would maybe [call for] some action scenes, yes. It’s not about action. It’s not the point. It’s not about [making] an action movie. It’s just doing Dune. It’s like a huge universe thing, and there’s such a fanbase, like guys who have been reading that forever—you can’t mess with that.”
Well it’s good to see the man is a big fan of the source material. Then again aren’t most filmmakers ‘big fans’ of the material they usually tackle? As always time will tell with this one. Morel is currently working on the script so hopefully we’ll have more soon once that gets finished. In case you’re new to DUNE I’ll hit you all with it’s synopsis via Wikipedia:
Set in the far future amidst a sprawling feudal interstellar empire where planetary fiefdoms are controlled by noble houses that owe an allegiance to the Imperial House Corrino, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides (the heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and the scion of House Atreides) as he and his family accept control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the “spice” melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe.
