Disney developing more than one Star Wars series for its streaming service

With the news that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be creating a new series of STAR WARS films, there's already plenty for STAR WARS fans to digest, but, in the words of Arthur Schiff, "wait, there's more!" It's already known that Disney was developing a live-action STAR WARS series for its upcoming streaming service, but Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors today that there are actually "a few" STAR WARS TV shows in the works.

We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app. We've mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the interties that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn't completely closed, we can't be specific about that.

Iger added that he thinks "you'll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well." It's not clear whether the other potential TV series will also be live-action, but I'd wager that at least one of them is. The as-yet-untitled Disney streaming service is expected to launch in late 2019. What type of STAR WARS TV shows would you most like to see?

Coming off of the success of Game of Thrones, you might have expected Disney to put David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to work on one of the STAR WARS series in development, but Bob Iger explained why the pair will be taking on a series of feature films instead.

Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we've actually been talking to them for a long time. To my knowledge they didn’t express interest in creating a series. They have an idea for number of films and at some later date I'm sure we'll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there.

Once the final season of Game of Thrones wraps up, Benioff and Weiss will get to work on STAR WARS, which leaves the fate of Confederate, their controversal alternative-history series, up in the air. As for the future of STAR WARS, we've got SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY arriving on May 25, 2018, followed by STAR WARS: EPISODE IX on December 20, 2019.
