District 9 postcards

With the calendar about to flip for good, all of us around these parts (and film fans/critics alike) are hashing out our top films of the year. And while we focus primarily on horror and sci-fi flicks, with some ass-kicking action thrown in for good measure, I honestly believe Neill Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9 is worthy of a top spot, irrespective of genre. Simply put: it’s one of the best flicks of the year!

So it comes with great lief that, in conjunction with today’s DVD release of the flick, a sweet little interactive Mothership Photo Upload Application will launch on the Official Site sometime next week. Check it…

In 1982, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed “The Prawns,” appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new ‘Prawn’ friends.

Seriously, here’s an exceptionally well made film of the highest entertainment value, one that also raises pertinent social issues (even if heavy handed at times) of apartheid and other nefarious governmental exploits. The best of both worlds…see the damn film!
