Doctor Strange cinematographer says the film could be “Marvel’s Fantasia”

Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE will begin shooting in London this November but in the meantime, there's still plenty of pre-production work to be done in order to nail down the look of the film. DOCTOR STRANGE cinematographer Ben Davis, who has also lensed AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY for Marvel, spoke with Screen Daily about the look of the upcoming film:

It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie, most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.

I doubt that Marvel would have been able to do DOCTOR STRANGE justice before now; right from the beginning the Doctor Strange comic was full of wonderfully out there depictions of other dimensions, unusual characters, and cosmic madness, all drawn to perfection by the great Steve Ditko. Now that Marvel has proved that audiences will turn up for a talking racoon and his giant tree companion, it's time for them to unleash the unique imagery of DOCTOR STRANGE:

There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard – you look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘well how the hell do we shoot that!?’ because it’s all sort of Escher stuff.

DOCTOR STRANGE will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tilda Swinton, with Rachel McAdams in talks for a role as well. The film is scheduled for a November 4, 2016 release.
